About the Electrician's (A Grade) licence
You can perform electrical installation work in Victoria as a holder of this licence – without supervision.
This licence allows you to perform electrical installation work as an employee.
This licence does not allow you to contract for electrical installation work for profit or reward.
You must also be a Registered Electrical Contractor to carry out work for profit or reward. This means you hold a Registered Electrical Contractors (REC) registration.

Requirements
You may apply for an Electrician's (A Grade) licence under one of the categories below.

Electrical apprentice pathway
Certification
You hold a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician or an equal certification.
Completion of apprentice training
You've completed a 4-year contract of training as an apprentice electrician. This includes at least 12 months of experience carrying out electrical installation work – with written confirmation from your employer.

Victorian Registrations and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) confirmation letter
You have a letter of completion from the VRQA. This letter confirms the successful completion of your apprenticeship.Completion of the Licensed Electrician's Assessment (LEA)
You've completed the Licensed Electrician's Assessment (LEA) – conducted by an assessment centre approved by Energy Safe. LEA completion must be within 5 years from the date of your application.
The LEA comprises 3 assessments
- Safe Working Practice (SWP)
- Licensed Electrician's Practical (LEP)
- Licensed Electrician's Theory (LET)

You're ready to pay the application fee of $434.10.

You currently hold an ES licence.
Certification

Electrical fitter pathway
Supervised Worker's Licence (L)
You currently hold a Supervised Worker's Licence.
Training contract completed
You've completed a 4-year contract of training as an electrical fitter. This resulted in a Certificate III in electrical fitting or equivalent.
Completion of 12 months of electrical installation work
You've completed 12 months of electrical installation work while holding a Supervised Worker's Licence. You must provide written confirmation from your employer.

Complete the Licensed Electrician's Assessment (LEA)
You have completed the Licensed Electrician's Assessment (LEA) conducted by an assessment centre approved by Energy Safe. LEA completion must be within 5 years from the date of your application.

Interstate pathway
For electrical workers from another state in Australia.
Equivalent qualifications with no licence
You have equivalent qualification – but do not currently hold a licence issued by an interstate licensing authority.
You must show equal experience to the pathways above. This includes your:
- Certificate III in Electrotechnology
- evidence of your apprenticeship
- standard of qualifications
- demonstrated skill in electrical installation work
- experience in electrical installation work.
Interstate licence
You hold a licence issued by an interstate licensing authority that is equivalent to a Victorian A Grade Licence – or have completed similar requirements outside Victoria that may be acceptable.

New Zealand pathway
For electrical workers from New Zealand.
Your licence
You hold a licence issued by the New Zealand licensing authority that is equivalent to a Victorian A Grade Licence.

International pathway
Credentials
Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR)
For applicants with a combination of overseas and local qualifications and experience – who aren't Australian residents or have an Australian passport.
You have, and can supply, your OTSR to Energy Safe.
Australian Technical Competency Statement (ATCS)
For applicants with a combination of overseas and local qualifications and experience – who have gained Australian citizenship.
You have, and can supply, your ATCS to Energy Safe.
Certification
You've completed the Australian context Gap Training. You also hold a Certificate III Electrotechnology Electrician qualification.
Supervised Worker's Licence (L)
You currently hold a Supervised Worker's Licence.
Completion of the Licensed Electrician's Theory assessment (LET)
You've passed the LET assessment with a result of 75% or higher.
Completion of the Licensed Electrician's Practical assessment (LEP)
You've passed the LEP assessment with a result of 75% or higher.
Completion of 12 months of electrical installation work
You've completed 12 months of electrical installation work while holding a Supervised Worker's Licence (L). You must provide written confirmation from your employer.
