Future Energy Skills (FES) conducts assessments for candidates who intend to apply for an Electrical Inspector’s licence – G Class and RE Class.
FES conducts G Theory, G Practical, Safe Approach, RE Theory and RE (restricted to internal combustion engines) Theory assessments.

FES advises Energy Safe of all licensing assessment results, however applicants must provide a copy of the results when applying for a licence.
Energy Safe Victoria cannot consider your application for a G Class Inspector licence until the relevant assessments are completed.

G Class assessments
In order to undertake the G Class assessments, the candidate should have:
- At least five years’ electrical trade experience after the successful completion of their apprenticeship, and hold a current A Class electrical worker’s licence or have an equivalent qualification.
Note: the requirement for at least five years electrical trade experience applies at the time of licence application, not at the time of undertaking the assessments. - Thorough knowledge of the current Australian and New Zealand Wiring Rules and associated Standards used to evaluate compliance of electrical installation work.
- A thorough understanding of the Electricity Safety Act 1998 and Electricity Safety (General) Regulations 2019 in relation to the safety of electrical installations, compliance and testing of electrical installation work, and the Certificate of Electrical Safety system.
You must complete the following assessments
- G Class Theory
Involves a written examination on a broad range of electrical knowledge. (3.5 hours) - Safe Approach
Inspecting and testing of electricity supply for construction purposes. (1 hour and 20 minutes, plus 10 minutes reading time) - G Class Practical
Inspection and testing of domestic/commercial/industrial electrical installations. (2.5 hours, plus 15 minutes reading time)
The minimum pass mark for each assessment is 75%.
Upon successful completion of all G Class assessments you may then apply to Energy Safe for your G Class inspector’s licence.

Equipment used in the assessments
Candidates must supply their own Insulation Resistance and Continuity tester, which shall be:
- Analogue
- No indication of PASS/FAIL
- Minimum of 250V/500V scale
- Minimum 2 x continuity scales
- True moving coil meter.
Candidates shall provide (for the Safe Approach assessment only):
- insulating gloves rated to 650V and marked with the relevant Australian Standard AS2225, IEC 903 or AS/NZS IEC 60903
- flame resistant outers.
FES provides all other testing instruments and tools required for the practical assessments and the latest version of the defect list. This does not preclude candidates bringing their own tools and equipment to use if they so choose.
Other points to note:
- A silent non-programmable calculator may be used
- Electrical devices including mobile phones and tablets are strictly prohibited
- A pen must be used for all written answers and calculations.
RE Class assessments
In order to undertake the RE Class theory assessment theory assessment, the candidate must:
- hold, or be eligible to apply for, a G Class LEI licence
- have a thorough knowledge of the current Australian and New Zealand Wiring Rules and associated Standards used to evaluate compliance of electrical installation work relating to electricity generation systems and battery systems
- a thorough understanding of the Electricity Safety Act 1998 and Electricity Safety (General) Regulations 2019 in relation to the safety of electrical installations, compliance and testing of electrical installation work relating to electricity generation systems and battery systems.
In order to undertake the RE Class (restricted to internal combustion engines) theory assessment, the candidate must:
- hold, or be eligible to apply for, a G Class LEI licence
- have a thorough knowledge of the current Australian and New Zealand Wiring Rules and associated Standards used to evaluate compliance of electrical installation work relating to internal combustion engine electricity generation systems
- a thorough understanding of the Electricity Safety Act 1998 and Electricity Safety (General) Regulations 2019 in relation to the safety of electrical installations, compliance and testing of electrical installation work relating to internal combustion engine electricity generation systems.
You must complete the following assessments
For the RE Class licence
- RE Class Theory
Involves a written examination on a broad range of electrical and standards knowledge relevant to the licence class. (3 hours)
OR
For the RE Class (restricted to internal combustion engines) licence
- RE Class (restricted to internal combustion engines) Theory
Involves a written examination on a broad range of electrical and standards knowledge relevant to the licence class. (1.25 hours)
The minimum pass mark for each assessment is 75%.
When you have successfully completed the RE Class Theory or the RE Class (restricted to internal combustion engines) Theory, you may apply to Energy Safe for your RE Class inspector’s licence or your RE Class (restricted to internal combustion engines) inspector’s licence.

OHS requirements for assessments
Candidates must wear appropriate clothing and footwear to all assessments as per Section 11 of AS/NZS AS/NZS 4836:2023.
All candidates must wear long sleeves, long pants and covered footwear.
Candidates wearing shorts, t-shirt or inappropriate footwear will be denied entry to the assessment.
