Energy Safe Victoria is warning people to stay well away from dangerous powerlines brought down by wild weather across the state.

CEO Leanne Hughson said fallen and broken powerlines could still carry electrical currents that can kill in an instant.

“It’s vital to stay at least 8 metres away from powerlines and anything they’re touching because electrical currents can travel some distance,” Ms Hughson said.

“That means the danger doesn’t end where the powerline does.”

Ms Hughson said people needed to resist the urge to try to make the area safe by moving downed powerlines or getting up close to take a look or photos.

“Please don’t be curious or complacent, and never attempt to move powerlines out of the way – you are putting yourself in real danger,” she said.

Anyone who sees a downed or damaged powerline should contact their electricity distributor. Details can be found at https://www.energy.vic.gov.au/households/find-your-energy-distributor.

With the extreme conditions causing mass power outages, Ms Hughson also warned people to take care in their homes and businesses.

“There is one clear message with electricity – don’t do major repairs yourself – it’s dangerous and illegal. Always use a licensed electrician to carry out electrical work, " she said

“People with solar power need to be aware that damaged solar panels can still generate electricity and present a risk of fire or electrocution.

“If your rooftop solar system has been damaged in the severe winds, you need to turn off the power at the inverter and call a registered electrical contractor to make the system safe.”

Energy Safe also warned people against bringing generators or outdoor gas appliances inside. Both can cause potentially deadly carbon monoxide poisoning if operated in enclosed spaces, including garages.

Further safety information, including advice on what to do after a power outage, can be found on the Energy Safe Victoria website.

Energy Safe. Always.
