When inspecting gasfitting work post 30 March 2023, Energy Safe may request evidence of the completion date where the gasfitter has applied the 2013 edition of the standard.

If the gasfitting work was commenced, or relates to building work where a building permit was issued, prior to 30 September 2022 (i.e. before the publication of AS/NZS5601.1:2022), gasfitters may choose whether to apply the 2013 edition or the 2022 edition of the standard to the work including work completed after 30 March 2023.

No. Replacing a gas turret in an existing science classroom will not trigger the new isolation requirements for installations in education institutions.

Where an education institution is renovating or upgrading the science classroom, this requirement will apply.

No. Unless the fitting line has been increased in size due to an increase in gas loads or additional appliances are installed.

The like for like replacement of an appliance in a commercial kitchen will not require the retrofitting of a commercial kitchen isolation valve.

No, fire emergency isolation is not required where the alteration to an existing gas installation is made in copper.

Protecting the extension of multilayer consumer piping alone and not the entire installation is not deemed to comply with clause 5.2.11 as it is a requirement of the clause to locate the fire emergency isolation as close as practicable to the gas supply point to the building.

No, work that commenced or a building permit that was issued prior to 30 September 2022 does not require the installation of a fire emergency isolation. Evidence of work commencement date or building permit issue date will be required to verify compliance.  .

Energy Safe strongly recommends fire emergency isolation be installed for any installation work that contains multilayer pipe.

No, where you are only changing over or installing a gas appliance a fire emergency isolation valve is not required to be retrofitted. However, Energy Safe strongly recommends the client is notified of the benefits of having fire emergency isolation installed on the installation as the client may request for fire emergency isolation to be installed.

Where multilayer pipe has been installed on a gas installation the requirements of clause 5.2.11 will need to be met which includes the need to locate the fire emergency isolation as close as practicable to the gas supply point / point of supply.

Where the complex gas installation was completed prior to 30 March 2023, commenced prior to 30 September 2022 or relates to new building work where a building permit was issued prior to 30 September 2022 fire emergency isolation is not required but is strongly recommended.

No. If you only use copper pipe for the entire gas installation, the fire emergency isolation requirements will not be required. The new requirement is only applicable for installations containing multilayer piping.

No. AS/NZS 5601.1: 2022 Clause 5.3.16 now prohibits the use of multilayer pipe above ground, external to a building.

Consideration of clause 5.3.8 which requires permanent joints to be used in an inaccessible wall cavity need to be remembered also.

Clause 5.3.9 also has additional requirements for gas pipework that passes through external walls

Yes. Gas appliances in balconies are required to have the flue terminal extend beyond the covered area and discharge towards the open side.

Note: this does not apply to barbecues and radiant gas heaters designed for outdoor use. An eave is not considered a covered area unless it abuts an adjoining structure.

No. The 650mm clearance from a gas cooker to a rangehood applies only to new kitchen installations or where a kitchen has been renovated with new cupboards. See Gas information sheet 25

Yes. If the installation was non-compliant, the installation must be made compliant with the clearance requirements at the time of the original installation.

Additionally, you must check the new gas cooker appliance installation instructions and rangehood manufacturer’s installation instructions to establish the required clearance as it may be greater than 600mm.

No. Freestanding commercial catering equipment with the inlet connection under the appliance can be installed using a hose assembly, provided the connection point from under the appliance is extended to a higher level (for example extended in copper) to allow the hose assembly to be installed in a U shape

Only if the appliance is permanently fixed when installed so that it cannot be moved. Semi-rigid connectors are only tested for flexibility for 30 cycles.
