Purpose
Victoria's energy safety laws refer to standards published by Standards Australia (AS and AS/NZS standards). This page provides information about how they apply when changed or updated.
Energy Safe’s expectations for updates to standards
Victoria’s energy safety laws include the Energy Safe Victoria Act 2005, the Electricity Safety Act 1998, the Gas Safety Act 1997 and the Pipelines Act 2005, and related regulations. These laws typically require regulated entities to comply with specific AS and AS/NZS standards ‘as published or amended from time to time.’ This means changes to those standards are automatically adopted in these laws from the date they are published. We require regulated entities to comply with the updated standards from that date, unless we communicate otherwise.
In some instances, the title, date or version number of an AS or AS/NZS standard as referenced in these laws no longer reflects the current version. Energy Safe expects regulated entities to comply with the current version in those circumstances. We will use the current version of the relevant standard(s) when assessing compliance, unless we communicate otherwise.
Below is a list of all AS and AS/NZS standards referenced in Victoria’s energy safety laws to help you understand your obligations.
